How to Prevent a Blocked Drain?

Your drains remove excess water from your home, helping keep it habitable. Blocked drains are a homeowner’s worst nightmare. They can fast become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and germs or lead to water damage. Why wait for your drains to become clogged and then address the problem, when you can take steps to prevent the issue in the first place?

Follow these tips to keep your drains clear all year round.

In the Kitchen

Avoid putting grease, oil, or vegetable fat down the drain as they do not decompose easily. Oil, grease, and vegetable fat can sit in your drains for several weeks or even months. As they solidify, these substances can cause blockages. Pour them into a container and throw them into your trash can. Place a strainer over the kitchen sink to catch food particles and debris. Remember to empty the strainer regularly.

To prevent buildup, pour hot water down your sink at least once a week. Alternatively, pour a cup of vinegar down your drain and let it sit for 30 minutes before rinsing with two quarts of hot water. Use a compost bin for food scraps rather than putting them down the drain.

A garbage disposal is designed to collect food scraps and shred them, so they pass through your drains easily. Run cold water while using your garbage disposal to ensure that food scraps are carried away through your drainage system. Also, every once in a while pour ice into your kitchen sink while using the device. Ice chills and scrapes the grease in your unit to prevent damage.

In the Bathroom

Install hair catchers or strainers in your bathtub drains and shower to prevent hair from entering bathroom drains. Never flush solid waste such as cigarette butts, feminine hygiene products, cotton balls, and wipes down your drains. In a nutshell, do not flush anything other than toilet paper down the toilet. Periodically, clean the drains in your bathroom with a mixture of baking soda and vinegar.
